Description

The U-Dig-It Light Duty shovel is the perfect tool for all your outdoor excursions. Use it at the campsite to clean up debris, bury pet or human waste, and much more.

Why bury shit?

Basically because it speeds up the decomposition of faeces and prevents contamination of aquifers. When we dig a hole and bury the poo, we prevent disease-causing organisms from spreading (for example, by unintentionally stepping on the cake, or by an animal rolling in it - there are puppies with this healthy habit... - or by insects), and that it ends up in torrential waters and from there in rivers, lakes, reservoirs... There is no need to dig an oil well; the most effective way to degrade them is to bury them 20 cm above the ground. If you remove with a stick and mix it with soil, you will accelerate the decomposition process. It is also very important not to defecate in dry beds, in flood zones or near watercourses (at least 60 m away), and it is best to dig in dry ground. In climates with permanent sub-zero temperatures, due to the lack of bacterial activity, the recommendation is to take the shit with you. Of course, toilet paper (and wipes, sanitary napkins...) should be taken away and thrown in the rubbish. Don't bury it or burn it; fires have been caused by doing this, for example: the fire that devastated 13,000 hectares in the Paine towers was caused by a hiker who burnt his paper. Take it with you in a bag and throw it away when you find a container. Urine, apart from odour problems, doesn't seem to cause as many problems as faeces. However, if we all choose the same place to urinate, we could cause chemical disturbances in the soil. The gravedigger's tools If you don't already have one, add a new gadget to your pack: a pooper scooper. Add a few watertight bags (the ones they sell for freezing food are very useful) to store paper and other waste, so you don't forget them in your backpack! How to shit in the bush' is one of Ediciones Desnivel's best sellers, with seven editions in Spanish and more than 20,000 copies sold, and from which some of the information in this article has been extracted. The question is: how is it possible that with so many copies in the hands of mountaineers and climbers, most of them still don't know how to shit in the mountains!
